1. R.S.V.P. – Say Yes! And SHOW UP.
2. Read newspapers (online or in print, magazines, curators and websites.
3. Dress appropriately. Not sure? Ask!
4. Arrive within 15 minutes of scheduled time. (That’s what shy people do).
5. Plan a 7-9 second self-introduction.
6. Be approachable: make eye contact and smile.
7. Wear nametags on your right side. (It’s the line of sight with the handshake)
8. Use information on nametags to open conversations.
9. Wear a conversation piece (tie, brooch, scarf, necklace). If you see someone is wearing a conversation piece, that’s an invite to approach them.
10. Be open to serendipity.
11. Best icebreaker: Hi! or Hello! with a smile.
12. Don’t wait. Initiate. Approach those standing alone.
13. Be nice to everyone. Ya’ Never Know who they are or who they know.
14. Act like a host. Make people comfortable with you.
15. Start with small talk. It leads to BIG TALK.
16. To avoid the “forgotten name nemesis,” always reintroduce yourself.
17. Be in the moment. No glancing over shoulders or at smart phones.
18. Take the earbuds off.
19. Turn off all electronics, except your pacemaker.
20. Listen actively and with your face – pay attention.
21. Exit conversations …graciously.
